CEP 800 - Psychology of Learning in School and Other Settings

Fall 2010

Instructor: Dr. Nick Sheltrown

This was the first graduate level course that I took that focused on the psychology of learning, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Content was presented from a historical perspective, evaluating and applying early philosophers’ theories about how people learn and what learners bring to the educational setting. During the course, I created an Audacity recording of a family of four about how they evaluate websites that they've never seen before. This project helped me tie together the various heuristic strategies of trying to learn a new piece of software along with the psychological theories of learning. Toward the end of the course, I wrote a brief Guide to Technology and Learning, comparing and contrasting school settings, with and without computer technology. Click here for PDF version of my paper on a Guide to Technology and Learning.

CEP 815 - Technology and Leadership

Spring 2012

Instructor: Dr. Nick Sheltrown

The goal of this course was to help develop us both as leaders as well as proponents of the use of technology in education and training. We were also introduced to the concept of TPACK, an integration of technology, pedagogy, and content knowledge in course development and delivery. In an assignment where we were asked to apply TPACK, I created a learning-technology initiative providing on-demand video instruction for auto technicians via mobile devices.  Click here for a PDF summary of how TPACK concepts can be applied to development of this initiative.

The course also provided a variety of highly practical and valuable articles that defined various leadership styles and provided guidance for personal leadership transformation. Among the many assignments, the creation of this satirical poster, representing an idea in leadership, was most memorable. Got morale or success/results issues? Watch out for this leadership style!  Read more here about the justification for this poster (PDF).

CEP 820 - Teaching K12 Students Online

Fall 2011

Instructors: Michelle Schira Hagerman and Sara Beauchamp-Hicks

The phrases "from the inside out" and "from the outside in" are commonly used for a variety of purposes. This course incorporated the use of these phrases for instructional development:

--examine ways to use the online world for collaboration and communication (inside out)

--to utilize the online world to create a learning unit (bring the outside in)

The culmination of my work in this course resulted in an online unit in advanced spreadsheet concepts.  WordPress, a blog site, was an ideal development/design tool for this purpose.  In the online course, students have the opportunity to learn how to compare/contrast the features of Excel and Google Worksheets while learning from each other.  The course can be found here:  http://funwithexcel.wordpress.com/

CEP 822 - Approaches to Educational Research

Summer 2011

Instructor: Dr. David Wong

During this course we were responsible for conducting research of our own as well as summarizing the research of others in the form of a literature review.

We used Survey Monkey to develop two surveys.   Data was summarized and analyzed using Excel graphs, percentages, and summary of the means.  We used discussion forums to compare results, as well as to discuss readings, perspectives, and opinions on the perceived value of educational research as a science.

Over the duration of the course, I prepared a literature review, examining the phenomenon of cyberbullying in our high schools. While the Internet has provided many educational benefits, it has also brought some serious online safety concerns.  As a parent and as an educator, I have seen too many incidents of cyberbullying.  My goal was to examine the research to help determine if school policies and educational practices are doing enough to help prevent cyberbullying.
